How to Clean Pet Stains

Clean Pet Stains

Even for animals like cats who have been trained to use a litter box, accidents may still happen. Certain foods may cause digestion problems, causing our pets to make a mess on the carpet. There are a few actions you can take as soon as you notice the issue to stop accidents from becoming pet stains.

Natural Remedies

If your pet is usually the neat, clean type, you may not have chemicals on standby to clean a mess. As such, you may need to whip up a homemade cleaning solution from whatever you have nearby. One of the best mixtures is one-part white distilled vinegar, one-part warm water and two parts baking soda. You can use a spray bottle for a more effective application. Blot up as much of the mess as you can, then apply your solution. Let stand for a few minutes, then blot it up.

If you don’t have vinegar in your pantry, consider this solution. After blotting up any excess liquid, pour about a cup of baking soda over the area. Then, mix a half cup of hydrogen peroxide and a teaspoon of dish soap. Slowly pour that over the baking soda, and gently rub into the fibers. After 10-20 minutes, vacuum up the area.

Manufactured Solutions

There are also many different store-bought solutions you can use to prevent pet stains. Just be sure these are already in the home. If you have to go buy it and come back, the stain could have time to really set it. Your local pet store will have a whole host of options for different stain removers, some specific to different animals.

There are a few common mistakes to avoid as well. Using strong-scented chemicals like ammonia may encourage your pet to re-mark their territory. In addition, a steam cleaner could cause the stain to set in quicker instead of removing it. Finally, mixing neutralizing and other cleaners could cause issues, or at least be ineffective. Make sure the area is completely free of other cleaners before using a nuetralizing one.
